Ten books and more...

about the works of Grażyna Szymała-Wołyńska Arteon, April 2002
Grażyna Szymała-Wołyńska suggests delicately the area that she derives her creative thought from – the God-given world order and the humen order, the attributes of divinity and humanity with their complicity and simplicity as well. this is the character of the sculptured books. ‚The Decalogue‘ - ten wooden, austerely carved slabs climb up. A signal red metal buckle crowns and holds up these slabs, gifted with a secret inner strength. But nothing is able to hold the truth of the Decalogue up, in hierarchical order – the slabs of the book separate under the influence of irregular clay sheets. This formal tearing apart is accompanied by the breakdown of the established order. There is another entry, fragile but strong, slipping among the parts of the Decalogue. There is no possibility of escape from the game, or maybe the fight between these two opposing matters. Their strength is inherent in it. The books by Grażyna Szymała-Wołyńska are indissolubly linkerd to man; they testify to complicated human nature and to situations that man gets into of his own free will. Maybe art will let us understand something and make our life easier.
